I teach high school in the concrete grid of Canarsie, Brooklyn. Many of my students have never visited Ellis Island, much less spent time in green spaces outside of NYC's parks. I am very excited to give them a chance to what life looks like outside the city. Most of them have never seen cows, or a chicken, or even more than a few trees next to each other. Most of what they know is concrete, plastic, or metal.
The trip I've organized is almost fully funded, thanks in part to the generosity of Hawthorne Valley Farm, a small, sustainable farm in Ghent, NY. Only bus transit, mandated by the safety requirements of the DOE, remains! It's the only thing keeping my students from their adventure in the country.
UPDATE: Due to more funding from SlowFood, I'm happy to announce that the goal is now $700!!
I need your help! I need $700 by May 15, 2012, to make this all happen. You will be helping young people see the world, as it really is, for the first time.
UPDATE: GOAL REACHED! THANK YOU ALL!
